What Google AI Mode Means for Local Businesses in 2026

Joseph Nicholas Abear · Updated Sep 11, 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer

Google AI Mode now helps people find and book local services: it brings together pricing and availability with links to book, and for categories such as home repair, beauty, and pet care, it can call businesses on a customer's behalf. Accurate Business Profile details, working booking options, and clear service pages decide who gets chosen.

Key takeaways

  • At I/O 2026, Google expanded agentic booking in Search to local experiences and services, rolling out to everyone in the U.S. in summer 2026.
  • For select categories, including home repair, beauty, and pet care, people can ask Google to call businesses on their behalf.
  • Google's guidance for its AI features includes keeping your Business Profile information current.
  • Bookings through a Reserve with Google provider may carry provider fees; a manual booking link is free but shows no performance data.
  • Clicks from AI Mode appear inside Search Console's Web search type and cannot be separated from ordinary search.

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is the conversational part of Google Search, where people ask longer questions, follow up, and get generated answers with links. Google said at I/O in May 2026 that AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users a year after its debut. For local businesses, the important change is not the chat itself. It is that Search can now help finish a task, like booking a service, instead of only listing businesses.

What changed for local businesses at I/O 2026?

Google announced two agentic features that reach local businesses directly. First, it expanded agentic booking in Search "to a wide range of new tasks, including local experiences and services." A searcher describes what they need, and Search brings together pricing and availability "with direct links to finish booking." Second, "for select categories like home repair, beauty or pet care, you can ask Google to call businesses on your behalf." Google said both would roll out to everyone in the U.S. in summer 2026.

Feature What it does Who it affects
Agentic booking Gathers pricing and availability and links to finish the booking Local experiences and services
Calling on the customer's behalf Google calls the business to ask about the request Select categories, including home repair, beauty, and pet care
The businesses AI Mode can act on are the ones whose details it can trust: current hours, a working phone number, a real way to book, and clear services.

How does AI search decide which businesses to show?

Google has not published separate ranking rules for local answers in AI Mode. What it has published is how its AI features work in general. Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews "may use a 'query fan-out' technique", issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response. Its advice for appearing in those features includes keeping Business Profile information current.

For local results more broadly, Google says ranking depends mainly on relevance, distance, and prominence, and that "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." It is reasonable to expect the same inputs to matter when an AI answer recommends a local business, because they are the data Google already holds about you. What changes is how many of them a single answer can weigh at once.

What should a local business do this quarter?

Start with the details Google's systems read directly, then the pages they draw on. None of this is new advice, but the cost of getting it wrong is higher when a system acts on your information instead of just displaying it.

  • Audit your Google Business Profile: categories, services, hours including holidays, phone number, service areas, and the website link. Fix anything out of date.
  • Set up a way to book. Google lets you connect a booking provider through Reserve with Google, which "might charge you," or add your own booking link, for which "performance data isn't available."
  • If you work in home repair, beauty, pet care, or a similar category, make sure the phone is answered during listed hours by someone who can quote availability and prices.
  • Give every service its own clear page that states what you do, where, and roughly what it costs, with the answer in the first sentence.
  • Keep your name, address, and phone number identical everywhere they appear.
  • Earn genuine reviews and respond to them. Prominence, in Google's words, includes "how many reviews you have."

What does this mean for your website?

Your website becomes the source AI search reads to understand what you offer. Pew Research Center found that question-style searches produced AI summaries 60 percent of the time in its March 2025 data, so the questions customers ask before they call are exactly where AI answers appear. A site that answers those questions clearly, service by service and area by area, gives an AI answer something accurate to draw on and a reason to name you.

That is what local SEO clusters are built to do: one clear page per service, supported by the guides and area pages that answer the questions around it. Disclosure: I build them for Oregon businesses, so weigh the source.

What is still unknown?

A lot, and it is better to say so. Google has not said how AI Mode chooses between businesses when several fit a request, how often it books versus links, or which categories calling will reach next. Measurement is limited too: Google says sites appearing in AI Mode are counted in Search Console's Performance report "within the 'Web' search type," so AI Mode clicks cannot be separated from ordinary search clicks. Treat any tool that claims to report them separately with caution.

Frequently asked questions

Google is expanding agentic booking in Search to local experiences and services, bringing together pricing and availability with links to finish booking. Connecting a booking provider through your Business Profile is the most direct way to be bookable.

For select categories, including home repair, beauty, and pet care, Google says people can ask it to call businesses on their behalf. Google said this would roll out to everyone in the U.S. in summer 2026.

It can. Google says that when you book through Google, "your provider might charge you." Adding your own booking link to your Business Profile is an alternative, though Google shows no performance data for custom links.

Not separately. Google reports AI Mode and AI Overviews traffic inside Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type, combined with regular search.

Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Accurate profile details, genuine reviews, and clear service pages are the levers you control.
