What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries Google shows at the top of some search results, answering the query directly with links to the pages they draw on.
AI Overviews appear on searches where Google's systems decide a generated summary would help, and they link to supporting pages. Google says no special work is needed to be eligible: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features." The fundamentals of regular search apply: pages must be crawlable, indexable, and genuinely useful.
The effect on clicks is measurable. A Pew Research Center study of 900 U.S. adults' browsing in March 2025 found they clicked a traditional search result in 8 percent of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15 percent when none did, and clicked a link inside the summary itself in just 1 percent. Being cited inside the overview is increasingly where visibility lives.
