What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries Google shows at the top of some search results, answering the query directly with links to the pages they draw on.
AI Overviews appear on searches where Google's systems decide a generated summary would help, and they link to supporting pages. Google says no special work is needed to be eligible: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features." The fundamentals of regular search apply: pages must be crawlable, indexable, and genuinely useful.
In browsing data from 900 U.S. adults in March 2025, the Pew Research Center found that people clicked a link inside an AI summary in just 1 percent of visits to results pages that showed one.
Why does it matter to your business?
If your customers see an answer before any links, the question is whether that answer is built from your pages. Clear, well-structured, accurate content is how you get in.
