What is a Google Business Profile?
Also called GBP.
Definition
A Google Business Profile is the free listing showing a business's name, location or service area, hours, reviews, and contact details in Search and Maps.
For a local business, the profile is often the first thing a customer sees: in the map results, in the panel that appears when someone searches the business's name, and in Google Maps. Service-area businesses that visit customers can hide their street address and list the areas they serve instead.
Google says local results are based mainly on three factors: relevance, "how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for"; distance, "how far each business is from the customer who's searching"; and prominence, "how well-known a business is", which takes into account links and reviews. It also states plainly: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." Complete, accurate, consistent information is the lever you have.
Why does it matter to your business?
For local services, the profile often shapes the first impression more than the website does. It is free, and worth keeping complete and current.
