How to Write an Answer Capsule an AI Engine Can Quote

Joseph Nicholas Abear · Updated Sep 11, 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer

An answer capsule is one or two sentences directly under a heading that answer it completely on their own. Write it by naming the subject instead of saying "it", answering in the first sentence, keeping it to roughly 20 to 25 words, stating facts plainly, and keeping links out of it.

Key takeaways

  • In a November 2025 study of 15 domains, 72.4 percent of blog posts cited by ChatGPT had an identifiable answer capsule.
  • About 91 percent of those capsules contained no links, and they typically ran 120 to 150 characters, about 20 to 25 words.
  • A capsule must survive being quoted alone: name the subject, answer first, and cut anything that points back to earlier text.
  • Capsules belong under every question heading, at the top of the page, and in FAQ answers.
  • A capsule makes a page easy to quote. It does not make it trusted; accuracy and authority still decide who gets cited.

What is an answer capsule?

An answer capsule is a short answer that sits directly under a heading and makes complete sense on its own. If an AI engine lifted it out and dropped it into a response, a reader would understand it without the rest of the page. The term comes from research into which pages ChatGPT cites, but the habit is older: it is also how featured snippets have always been won.

The capsule is not the whole section. It is the opening sentence or two, the part that answers the heading. Everything after it adds the detail, the evidence, the exceptions, and the links.

What did the research actually find?

The clearest data comes from an analysis published by Search Engine Land on November 19, 2025. It examined 15 domains across ecommerce, cybersecurity, healthcare, data analytics, education, and local business, which together drew nearly 2 million organic sessions a month and 7,500 referral sessions from ChatGPT.

Finding Result
Cited blog posts with an identifiable answer capsule 72.4%
Capsules with no links at all About 91%
Typical capsule length 120 to 150 characters, about 20 to 25 words
Cited posts with original data or brand-owned insight 52.2%
Cited posts with both a capsule and original insight 34.3%

Two limits are worth keeping in mind. The study looked only at blog content, and it describes traits of pages that were cited, not proof that the traits caused the citations. It is still the most specific evidence available, and it matches how answer engines work: they assemble answers from passages, and a passage that stands alone is easier to use.

What makes a capsule quotable?

Seven rules cover almost every capsule. Each one comes from asking a single question: would this sentence still make sense, and still be accurate, if it were the only thing a reader saw?

  • Answer in the first sentence. The heading asks; the next sentence answers.
  • Name the subject. "Local SEO clusters are" beats "They are", because a quoted "they" means nothing.
  • Skip the warm-up. "Great question" and "In today's world" delay the answer and add nothing to a quote.
  • Keep it short. The cited capsules in the study ran about 20 to 25 words. One or two sentences is plenty.
  • State the fact plainly. Put the subject, the verb, and the answer in that order, with the key number or detail inside the sentence.
  • Keep links out of it. Put them in the sentences that follow, where they help the reader who wants more.
  • Match the heading. If the heading asks how much, the capsule gives a figure or a range, not a philosophy.

What do weak and strong capsules look like?

Weak capsules usually fail in one of three ways: they point back to something earlier, they warm up before answering, or they answer a different question than the heading asked.

Heading Weak opening Stronger opening
How long does Google take to recrawl a page? It depends on a lot of factors, which we will get into below. Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after you request it.
What is a content audit? This is something every site owner should consider doing. A content audit is a page-by-page review that decides what to keep, improve, merge, or remove.
Does Google Search use llms.txt? Great question! There is a lot of debate about this. Google Search does not use llms.txt; its documentation says no special AI text files are needed to appear in its AI features.

Notice what the stronger versions share. Each names its subject, answers in the first clause, and would still be true and useful printed on its own.

Where should answer capsules go?

Answer capsules belong anywhere a reader, or an engine, arrives with a question. That means directly under every question-style heading, in a short quick-answer box at the top of the page, in each FAQ answer, and at the start of every service page, where the first sentence should say plainly what the service is. This site uses all four, and the quick answer at the top of this article is one.

How do you check your capsules?

The fastest test is to read each capsule aloud without its heading. If it still answers something, it passes. If it starts with "it", "this", or "that", or needs the previous paragraph to make sense, rewrite it.

For a whole page at once, the free AEO Checker grades every section on this question: it flags back-references, warm-up filler, links inside the capsule sentence, and openings too short to be an answer. It runs in your browser and uploads nothing.

What can a capsule not do?

A capsule cannot make an engine trust you. It removes a reason to skip your page, but the engine still weighs accuracy, sources, and the reputation of the site and the author. That is why the same study found original data in more than half of cited posts. The strongest pages combine both: a clean answer, and something only that page can say. Disclosure: writing pages like that is part of what I sell, so weigh the source.

Frequently asked questions

In the Search Engine Land study, cited capsules typically ran 120 to 150 characters, about 20 to 25 words. That is an observed range, not a rule; one or two complete sentences is the practical target.

It can, but about 91 percent of cited capsules in the study had none. Keep the capsule clean and put links in the sentences that follow it.

No, but they are closely related. A featured snippet is a Google feature; an answer capsule is a writing pattern. A good capsule is the kind of passage both featured snippets and AI engines tend to quote.

No. Engines choose their sources, and the study shows correlation, not cause. Capsules make a page easy to quote; accuracy, original insight, and trust decide whether it is chosen.

Every section that answers a question should. Purely navigational sections, like a list of related links, do not need one.
