What is an answer capsule?

Definition

An answer capsule is a short, self-contained answer placed directly under a heading, written so an AI engine can quote it without the text around it.

The term has no standard definition yet. In an audit of 15 domains published by Search Engine Land in November 2025, 72.4 percent of blog posts cited by ChatGPT included an identifiable answer capsule: a short answer placed directly after the title or a question-style H2. About 91 percent of those capsules contained no links. That is correlation from one study, not a guarantee, but it matches how the engines work: they lift passages, and a passage that answers the question on its own is easy to lift.

A good capsule names its subject instead of saying "it" or "this", answers in its first sentence, and stays short, usually one to three sentences. The detail, the caveats, and the links belong in the paragraphs that follow.

Why does it matter to your business?

Your best answers only help you in AI search if they can be quoted. Capsules turn your expertise into sentences an engine can use, with your page as the source.
