What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Also called AEO.

Definition

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is structuring content so answer engines, from featured snippets to AI chat, can pull a direct answer from it and credit you.

AEO predates today's AI tools. It began with featured snippets and voice assistants, which read one answer aloud instead of listing ten links, and it now covers AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and similar systems that compose answers from sources.

Most of the work is ordinary good writing made precise: headings phrased as the questions people ask, a direct answer immediately under each, facts stated plainly, and structured data that matches the visible page. It overlaps almost entirely with good SEO and with GEO, and the same page can serve all three. The honest summary is that AEO is a lens on content, not a separate discipline, and anyone selling it as a replacement for SEO is renaming the basics. Question headings and direct answers help readers skim, too.

Why does it matter to your business?

More searches now end with an answer on the results page than with a click. If you are going to be summarized, you want to be the source that gets named.
