What is an AI citation?
Definition
An AI citation is when an AI answer engine names or links your page as a source for its answer. It is the AI-search equivalent of ranking.
When ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, or AI Mode compose an answer from web sources, they often show which pages they drew on. Being one of those sources is an AI citation. It can send a visitor, and even when it does not, it puts your name in front of the person asking.
No one can guarantee citations, because the engine chooses its sources. What you can control are the inputs that make a page easy to choose: it must be reachable by the engine's search crawler, it should answer questions directly in quotable sentences, its facts should be accurate and sourced, and the business behind it should be recognizable across the web. Tracking citations means asking the engines your customers' real questions and noting who they cite.
Why does it matter to your business?
As more answers are composed rather than listed, the source line is where visibility lives. Citations reward the same fundamentals rankings always did.
