What is a pillar page?
Definition
A pillar page is the central page of a topic cluster: a broad overview of a subject that links to every supporting page covering its parts in depth.
A good pillar answers the main question about a topic well enough to stand alone, then points to the detail. It is not the longest page on the site by rule, and it is not a table of contents. It should give a reader who reads nothing else an accurate, useful understanding, and give a reader who wants more a clear next page for each part.
On a service business site, the pillar is often the service page itself, with guides, comparisons, and answers to common questions supporting it. On a publisher or software site it is more often a guide. Either way, it earns links from every page in its cluster, which makes it the page most likely to rank for the broad search.
Why does it matter to your business?
The pillar is usually the page you most want found. Building supporting pages around it, and linking them back, is how you give it that chance.
